In 2015, seventeen babies lost their lives due to Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID); most due to unsafe sleeping conditions. To help ensure newborns have a safe sleeping environment, First 5 Kern funding provided a port-a-crib for babies born at the Kern Medical Small Wonders Birth Center, along with life-saving, safe sleeping practice information.
Kern Medical, in partnership with the County of Kern and the Department of Public Health Services, founded the local Safe Sleeping Program to decrease the number of SUIDs in the county.
